What has been the most surprising aspect of château life that you didn’t expect?

I think to expect the unexpected.  Every job is enormous.  The generosity of people.  The different way of life.

How do you balance modern living with the historic charm of your château?

As more renovations are done we have more and more mod cons.  Although its like living in a fairy tale.

What are the biggest challenges of maintaining a château?

The absolute enormity of everything

What is your favourite room or space in the château and why?

I think it has to be the kitchen.  Its the most finished room and where we spend the majority of our time.  Its a place to congregate but also looks out onto the village square so we can see whats happening!

What has been the most rewarding renovation project you’ve undertaken so far?

Definitely the kitchen as its transformed the way we live at the chateau.  But also of course the shower room.  Our chateau had never had running water before so to have these 2 functioning rooms is a giant leap forward

Have you encountered any unexpected obstacles during your renovations?

I think the only huge obstacle was when the barn roof collapsed.  It set back other work quite a long way but it will also mean we have access around the entire chateau now which makes repairs easier.

What tips do you have for someone considering restoring a historic property?

Everything is difficult but endlessly rewarding.  Be prepared for things to take time and listen to the building the more time you spend in it the more your plans evolve to suit yours and the buildings needs.

How do you source authentic materials and furnishings for your château?

As we are antiques dealers this part of the challenge is easier for us.  We use a lot of architectural salvage in our work.  Our chateau is 14th century though and we absolutely do not want to be living as people did when it was built! We also don’t want it to look like a modern conversion. Its quite a balancing act.

What is the next big project you’re planning for the château?

We need to finish the stairs and then we can start work on the top floor and finally have bedroom instead of camping in the corner of the great hall.

How has living in France influenced your daily routine and lifestyle?

We are busy in the UK and busy in France there isn’t a huge amount of difference for us.  In France we are buying stock for our shop, renovating and filming a certain tv programme!! I think one difference is I take more time to cook now we have a kitchen.

What are some of your favourite local traditions or customs that you’ve adopted?

I think we take more time to stop and talk to people and have met some really lovely friends.

Can you share a typical day in your life at the château?

Work, work and work, mixed in with drinking coffee and talking with friends

What do you love most about the local community and area?

We are right in the middle of our village so get to see everything thats happening.  We are next door to the Maries office and most village events are in the square right outside our window.

How do you celebrate holidays and special occasions in France?

So far our trips have not really coincided with any big holidays.
